Some stories about Japanese language (Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji , Kanji workbook, calligraphy).

We use Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji to write Japanese language.

○ひらがな (Hiragana)
Hiragana was produced during the Heian Period (794-1185).

Before that people used manyo-gana originating in China but it was inconvenient. So simplified form, Hiragana was developed.

Hiragana consists of 48 phonetic symbols.

We learn Hiragana at kindergarten, elementary school and also at home.
Some parents put Hiragana sheet on the bath or toilet wall to help children to learn Hiragana.

○漢字 (Kanji, Chinese characters)
Kanji was brought from China. One Chinese character has one meaning.

In Japan, Kanji has usually two kinds of read pattern. One is 音読み(on-yomi). The other is 訓読み(kun-yomi).

for example: 山
on-yomi: ‘San’ comes from Chinese pronunciation.
kun-yomi: ‘Yama’ is produced by adding a Japanese meaning to the Chinese word ‘山’.

We learn 1006 letters Kanji from 1st grade to 6th grade of elementary school and 1130 letters from 1st grade to 3th grade of junior high school (during compulsory education).

○漢字ドリル(Kanji drill, Kanji workbook)
In Japan we use Kaniji drill to practice Kanji learned in Japanese textbook.

In drill how to read Kanji, example sentences, stroke order is introduced. In addition, we take exercises for Kanji by tracing model characters for writing.

After that we sometimes have to practice Kanji on notebook repeatedly as homework.

Recently “Unko Kanji Drill” is very popular among elementary school students.
