During New Year period we place decoration on some places. I’ll introduce about main two decorations.
・しめ縄、しめ飾り(Shimenawa, Shimekazari)
Shimenawa is a kind of 注連縄（しめなわ）which works as a partition between the sacred space and the external world at Shinto shrines.
There is also Shimenawa for cars.
Recently new type of Shimenawa is also sold.
This type of Shimenawa is good for western style house.
These Shimenawa are a little similar to Christmas wreath.

Shimenawa is straw thick rope decoration for good luck. It is placed on the gates, entrances or cars’ front side from the end of the year to the beginning of next year.
Shimenawa is a kind of 注連縄（しめなわ）which works as a partition between the sacred space and the external world at Shinto shrines.
It has the role of yorishiro, where the Toshigami (Year God) make a stop before entering the house. Year god is a god who promises happiness and good harvest in the year.
In Shimenawa it is attached that many good luck charms such as fern (longevity), daidai orage (prosperity).

They were sold at supermarket. Very small decorations were also sold.

・門松（Kadomatsu）
Kadomatsu is pine decoration for the gate. It is placed in front of the gate in pairs around December 28th.
Kadomatsu as same as Shimenawa have the roles of yorishiro, where the Year God make a stop before entering the house.
Recently houses decorate Kadomatsu are decreasing but some stores and companies decorate Kadomatsu even now.
Nowadays Kadomatsu as large as flower basket is also sold at supermarket or Home improvement center (DIY store).
It doesn’t need much space and it is reasonable price. It is easy to decorate.
