Dandgo is a traditional Japanese confectionery.
It is made from joshinko (rice flour) or shiratamako (glutinous rice flour).
Nowadays, we rarely make dango by ourselves but how to make dango is as follows:
Add water to joshinko or shiratamako and roll it into small balls and steam them.
Usually dango contains less glutinous rice than mochi(=rice cake), so it is softer and less sticky.
There’s a wide variety of dango. And sauce or toppings of dango also differ from place to place. I’ll introduce some of them.
Kushi dango (skewed dango) is the most popular.
・Mitarashi Dango
It is covered with a thick syrup made from soy sauce and sugar.
・Ann Dango
It is covered with sweetened azuki red bean paste.
・Hanami Dango
Three colored (pink, green, white) dango. Usually we eat this dango in Hanami season.
(Hanami: In cherry blossoms blooming season we enjoy eating and drinking with family, friends or coworkers under the tree while viewing flowers.)
But in fact there are also saying like this:
‘Hana yo ri dango.’
Literally ,‘Dumplings rather than flowers.’ The meaning is ‘People are more interested in the practical over the aesthetic.’
・Tsukimi Dango
Kushi dango is usually formed of four dumplings but three dumplings also became standard after the song 『Dango san-kyodai (=Dango three brothers)』was a big hit in 1999. This is tango-style music. Dango and tango is similar pronunciation in Japanese language.
