Japanese Valentine's Day

In western countries, on Valentine’s Day they send message card for love or appreciation each other. Men usually give flowers to women with the card.

Some Asian countries’ men also give flowers to women on the day.

In Japan we spend a little unique Valentine’s day.

Women are encouraged to express love to men by giving chocolates.
It is said this typical Japanese Valentine’s day was spread by chocolate company to all over the country.

And Japanese men usually give back candy or white chocolate or gift to the women on White Day (March 3.).

Nowadays, we sometime give chocolate to friends (we call it Tomo choco ), bosses, and collegues (we call it Giri choco=obligatory chocolate) on this day.

Recently some women buy chocolate for themselves, we call it Jibun choco.

There’s a good selection of chocolates (imported brand chocolate and created chocolate) at this time of the year so they buy special chocolate to eat themselves.

This period very expensive chocolate which costs 5000 yen just for one is sold at city department store. It is in the box which is like jewelry box.

There are many words to call Valentine Chocolate (mainly among young generation.)

Girls→Girls (Yuri choco)
Boys→Boys (Homo choco)
Girls→Friends on Twitter (Tui choco)
Girls→Talent (fan choco)
Boys→Girls (Saka choco ) Saka=opposite

Except this there are too much words to introduce. (^_^;)

During Valentine period, special chocolate corner is set at supermarkets or department store.
We can buy limited-time or special imported chocolate we can’t buy usual time.

Not all women give chocolates on Valentine’s Day, but sales of chocolates on Valentine’s Day is more than 10% of annual sales.

It has visible economic effects.
