Akiyoshido Cave_You will admire its size and mistical beauty.

秋芳洞(Akiyoshido Cave) is limestone cavern formed by erosion of the lime stone.

The cave is in Yamaguchi Prefecture. There are a lot of caves around there, but Akiyoshido Cave is the largest, and it is also the Orient’s best large limestone cavern.

It was designated a Special Natural Monument in 1952.

This cave’s broadest point is 100 meters and the height of its highest is 80 meters!
The temperature in the cave is 17℃ and moisture is 99-100% all year around.

The length of standard course which open to the public is one kilometer.
I’ll show you some well-known points.

There are three entrances (No.1,8,7). I entered No.1 entrance.
・Kurage no Takinobori (No.2)
It seems like jellyfishes are leaping a waterfall.

・Ougon Bashira (No.3)
The meaning is a Golden Pillar. This pillar’s height is 15meters. It is awesome and mysterious beauty! This is one of highlights.

・Kasazukushi (No.9)
It seems a lot of umbrellas are hanging from the ceiling.

・Chimathida (No.11) (=Travertine terraces)
It is similar to rice terraces. Each terrace of No.11 is bigger and shallower than the terrace of No.5.

・Hironiwa&Dounaifuji (No.4)
The word means broad-garden and Mt. Fuji in the cave. Calcareous water dropped from the ceiling and created this shaped rock.

・Hyakumaizara (No.5) (=Travertine terraces)
It is similar to Hundred Saucers. I like this spot the best. Each saucer is filled with water. It is refreshing and perfect for nostalgia.

・Nagabuchi (No.6)
It seems a deep pool. The length is 70 meters. Orange colored part is the trace of water label more than 50 years ago. Those days people visited here by boat.

・Exit(No.7) You can also enter from this side.
On the way to exit, there is a board signed ‘秋芳洞冒険コース(入口)’. If you like to join, pay additional charge (300 yen) , have rental flashlight in your hand, go up ladder there. You can experience a bit of adventure. It takes 10-15 minutes.

You don’t need reservation, but this course might be canceled in case of high-water level.

As the ground is wet and slippery, you need sneaker and also recommend pants style if you join adventure course.
Please check other detailed information about Akiyoshido Cave (admission fee or transportation access)  on official site. (URL:english.karusuto.com)

Ride wheelchairs can sightseeing from No.7 entrance ramp to No.4. ( Care personnel is necessary. Please check detailed information on official site Japanese version and contact them on telephone if you need.)

Except this, there are two caves people can enter.

・景清洞 (Kagekiyodo)
Adventure course in which flashlight is used is popular.

・大正洞(Taisyodo)
Taisyodo is full of variety and dimensional.

If you don’t have enough time and have to select one cave, I think Akiyoshidai Cave is the best. I have never been to Kagekiyodo or Taisyodo but Akiyoshido cave is large scale and overwhelming.

Akiyoshidai Cave is under the Akiyoshidai Plateau. Akiyoshidai Plateau was coral reef in ancient times and limestones are dotted on this plateau now. I’ll introduce Akiyoshidai Plateau some other time.
