There's a good selection of bread in Japan.
Walking down the street, you will see many bakeries in Japan.
You can find personal bakery, bakeries in department stores and shopping moles, bakery corners of supermarkets.
Japanese bread is very soft. Some people may think too soft and not good enough. But this is our countries’ bread.
Off course we have baguette and white bread, too.
But instead of eating bread with main dish, we Japanese tends to eat only bread (without main dish) when we eat them.
And we sometime eat bread as snacks for coffee time.
So there are lots of bread as deli (=like sandwich) and as sweet bun (=like snack, donut, cupcake).
This is just one example.

カレーパン Curry bread: Fried bread stuffed curry paste
ウインナーパン Wiener roll: rolled bread inside wiener or sausage (No.3)
コロッケパン Fried mashed potato bread: cut roll bread stuffed fried mashed potato and cabbage (No.4)
チーズパン Cheese bread: bun baked cheese on the top (No.2)
ハンバーガー You can buy hamburgers in bakery shops, too. (No.5)
The taste depends on shops so you can eat hamburgers which are different from burger shop.
Sweet bun

アンパン Ann bread: sweet bean paste bun (classical type) Usual type poppy seeds are on the top.
There are usually two types of bean paste. One is with hull of beans. (We call it つぶあん tsubu ann.)
The other is without hull of beans. (We call it こしあん koshi ann.) The first photo of ann bread photos.
The origin of Ann bread goes back to Meiji period (1874). Yasube Kimura who is from Ibaragi Prefecture made a recipe.
クリームパン Cream bread: custard cream paste bread (classical type)
メロンパン Melon bread: Bun coated with sweet bread dough on one side. And sugar is on the top. (Classical type).
The shape is like fruits, melon or a tortoise. So we call it melon pan or かめのこパン kamenoko pan.
チョココルネ Chocolate cornet: Bread dough is a little similar with croissant. Rolled cornet stuffed chocolate cream or whipped cream.
You can buy many kinds of bread at supermarket bread corner, too.

These are low-priced one.
These are a little premium one.
There are some restaurants where you can get free refills of freshly baked bread. Bread types are depends on restaurants, but you can eat bread like this:
