The sweets that brought into Japan and became a standard

Japanese people live in small islands and tend to have an island-nation mentality.

We are not good to accept different thinking and diversity of culture.

So you may be surprised, but Japanese people are tolerant of different countries’ food and goods.

I think Japanese people love trying out new things.

Today I’ll write about sweets.

After we try imported things at first, most things are arranged in a Japanese style, and became standard.

Following sweets are some examples.

・Tiramisu
The origin of Tiramisu is Italy.

In Japan it came into fashion in 1990s. After the rage it became standard. Mascarpone cheese is not sometime available so we use usually cream cheese or other kind of cheese instead of it.

・Éclair and Cream Puff (chou à la crème)
The origin of éclair is in France.

It is said Fujiya (sweets company) sold éclair and cream puff for the first time in Japan in 1918.

・Macaron
The original macaron was made in Italy.

In Japan macarons (macaron parisien) were sold in 1930 for the first time.

・Waffle
The origin is obelios (=bread) made in ancient Greece.

Waffles were brought into Japanese country in 1891 for the first time.

Manneken(Belgian waffle shop) spread waffle all over the country in 1986.
・Nata de coco
Nata de coco is Philippines traditional food.

It is said the first Nata de coco in Japan war brought by Del monte in 1970s.

But it was since 1993 that they came into fashion.

Nowadays Nata de coco is not particularly popular but it became stable food.

・Mille-feuille
The origin of Mille-feuille is in France.

It is said it was in 1870s that Mille-feuille was brought into Japan.

・Castella
It is said the origin of Castella is in Portugal. But there is no sweets whose name is Castella in Portugal and original Castella is different (how to make and appearance) from Japanese Castella.

Castella was developed independently from the original style.

It is said that the origin of Japanese Castella is in Nagasaki.

If you visit Japan, please try some of them.
